What is a Certificate Authority?
A certificate authority is a trusted third party that issues digital certificates.
Root CA
A Root CA is the first certificate authority in a chain of trust. It has a special certificate that is used to sign other certificate.. The Root CA is a long time certificate authority that is trusted by all other certificate authorities. Our Root CA has in default a validity of 30 years. Every Intermediate CA has a validity of 10 years. The Root CA is only used to sign Intermediate CA certificates and not to sign end-user certificates.
Validity
- 30 years in default
- You can change the validity of the Root CA in the Settings page.
Issuable Certificates
- Certificate Authority (Intermediate CA)
Intermediate CA
A Intermediate CA is a certificate authority which is signed by a Root CA and can be used to sign other certificates. This is the most common type of certificate authority.
Validity
- 10 years in default
- You can change the validity of the Intermediate CA in the Settings page.
